The backbone of Illumination Health starts with 700+ rheumatology providers who are members of our Network of Excellence in Rheumatology (ENRGY). ENRGY, supported Illumination Health, is the foundation of the only U.S. rheumatology community practice-based research network (PBRN), currently located across 27 U.S. states. We want to transform care, not merely study it, and can conduct clinical trials, prospective observational, implementation science, and quality improvement projects. Our goal is to harness data and technology to support the practice of rheumatology, generating real-world data along the way, as part of a Learning Network. For rheumatology practices that aren't members of ENRGY, we extend our PBRN model, to engage interested rheumatology sites with research capabilities to participate, and provide them an income stream for participation, plus study-specific compensation.
The advantages of a practice-based network
Data Quality
We source the data directly from the most significant and meaningful place - the EHR. Since we are able to access the data in its native state, every note, finding, test result and image is in our data set. Additionally, the physicians are trained and incentivized to "normalize" their documentation, so the data is captured at the point of care consistently from practice to practice.
Flexibility and Completeness
Because of our closed network structure and common infrastructure, even if the physicians are not capturing a certain data element, test, or note, we are able to immediately integrate the missing element into the workflow. This simply means that we have the ability to quickly and easily augment the data needed for any research or project.

Our network has the reputation as one of the most rewarding and desirable from a physician perspective. Therefore our network is expanding constantly, and each physician is contractually bound to minimum standards regarding data capture, technology utilization, and targeted education engagement.
